Crossing from Torres del Paine to El Calafate

The drive from Torres del Paine to El Calafate takes 5 to 6 hours, and the border is what makes the timing unpredictable. Travelers pass through Cerro Castillo on the Chilean side and Cancha Carrera on the Argentine side, two posts about 7 km apart, each with its own queue.

Four things decide whether this leg goes smoothly, and almost nobody mentions them in advance.

The border keeps office hours

The crossing operates roughly from 08:00 to 21:00, with shorter hours in winter. A transfer that leaves late does not get through, and there is no arrangement to be made on the spot. Departure time is set by the border rather than by the lodge's convenience.

The rules that bite in the other direction

Going from Torres del Paine to El Calafate, the traveler is leaving Chile, and most trips end on that side: a flight from El Calafate to Buenos Aires, then home. For those itineraries, the Chilean entry requirements never come up.

They matter when the trip runs the other way, Argentina into Chile, and then they matter a lot.

Chile requires a sworn declaration, filled in online at least 24 hours before entering the country. Almost no English-language guide mentions it, and it is one of the most common causes of delay at the post. The traveler fills it in themselves, ahead of time, and whoever runs the trip confirms it was done rather than leaving it for the morning of the crossing.

Chile also does not allow fresh fruit, vegetables, meat or dairy into the country, and all luggage passes through X-ray. A traveler who bought cheese and cured meat in Argentina loses them at the border and can leave with a fine. Someone arriving at a remote lodge annoyed and fined, over something a message the day before would have prevented, has had their trip damaged for no reason.

The queue is real

How long the crossing takes depends on the day. In high season the line at both posts is genuine, and it is the reason nothing tight should ever be scheduled after a border: no late flights out of El Calafate, no activity booked for that afternoon with a narrow margin.

On the other side

El Calafate is the base for the glaciers, and El Chaltén sits about 3 hours further on, on a paved road with no fuel along the way. Together they are the natural extension of a Torres del Paine trip, and the reason this crossing gets made at all. Most travelers finish there and fly out of El Calafate to Buenos Aires, then home, which is why the crossing usually happens once, in this direction. How many nights to plan on the Chilean side first.
