How to get to San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama has no airport. Travelers fly into Calama, about two hours from Santiago, then cover roughly 100 km on Route 23, about 1 h 15 by road.

That is the whole journey, and it is a gentler arrival than Patagonia: a flight and a short drive, rather than two long legs back to back.

The Antofagasta alternative, and when it earns its place

Antofagasta is the other airport in the region. The flight from Santiago is similar, and then the drive to San Pedro runs between 3 h 40 and 5 hours.

That only makes sense for a traveler who wants the northern coast before the desert. For everyone else, Calama.

The lodge pickup still decides the flight

As in Patagonia, the lodges collect guests at set times, and the flight gets chosen against that schedule rather than against the fare. A traveler who lands outside those hours waits, or pays for a private transfer that someone has to arrange in advance.

Arrival day belongs at low altitude

San Pedro sits at about 2,400 m, roughly 7,900 feet, and several of the main excursions climb far higher. The Tatio geysers are above 4,000 m.

Nothing high on the first day. Acclimatization is gradual and cannot be rushed, which makes the arrival day a planning decision rather than a free afternoon. How many nights to plan, and how to handle the altitude.

Where Atacama sits in a longer trip

Atacama is the natural counterpoint to Patagonia, and a trip that includes both shows a traveler two countries inside the same one.

When the trip includes both, put Atacama second. Arriving at altitude straight off a long-haul flight is harder than arriving once the traveler has already adjusted to the country.

One thing that does not fit: Atacama and Patagonia in a single week. That is two domestic flights plus the transfers on both ends, and the trip turns into logistics.
