When to go to San Pedro de Atacama, and when to avoid it

The Atacama works almost all year round. Planning it well comes down to knowing which two windows need care, and they need it for different reasons.

Avoid February and early March

This is the one that ruins trips. The Altiplanic winter brings humid air masses that produce rain and storms at altitude, and those storms can close the roads to the Tatio geysers and to the high lagoons. The highest probability falls at the end of February and the start of March.

A traveler who arrives in those weeks can lose the main attractions to a closed road, which is half the reason they came.

January is close to perfect

Clear skies, open roads, and the exception inside the Chilean summer. If a traveler wants the desert in the southern summer, this is the month.

December works, and it fills up

The skies cooperate. The problem is company: December overlaps with the end-of-year holidays in the United States, and the desert gets busy. A traveler who can move their dates gains a quieter trip for the same money.

April to November is the reliable window

Almost no chance of rain, clear skies, open roads, fewer people and lower prices. Days run about 20 to 26°C, roughly 68 to 79°F, and nights fall to around 5°C, about 41°F.

For most travelers, this is the answer, and it covers two thirds of the calendar.

Winter is for the sky

June to August brings very cold nights and exceptionally clear skies, with snow on the volcanoes. For a traveler who came for photography or astronomy, it is the best time of the year, and the cold is the price of the clearest air.

The desert is not warm

The temperature swing is the detail travelers get wrong. It can reach 30°C during the day and drop to zero at night, so warm clothing belongs in the bag in every season, including January.
